Roman Soldier by KEGO44 Roman Soldier by KEGO44
This was a preliminary paiinting I did for an MMO that my company is hoping to put out called Gods and Heroes, Rome Rising.
We recently purchased the game which was well underway from another company that is no longer around. We are hoping to finish it up and release it.
Anyways...long story short, I love the genre, and have had fun trying a looser painting style... somewhat in the style of Frank Frazetta, who I have an even greater appreciation for...

Great picture :D 9/10

Reminds me more of greeks though as romans had squared, scutums not short rounded targes, auxillia had oval scutums, also a roman helmet, with a crest is only for centurions not legionaries, and the crest is transverse from ear to ear generally. also, he has no segmentata.

BUT THIS AINT NO HISTORY LESSON!

the helmet, the sword and the shield are not roman... the painting is amazing!

I always assumed they chose red for garments in order to disguise blood stains but I could be wrong on that.

I like your pic but it's a shame more rpg/mmo's with this theme aren't made without the inclusion of magic etc. To me the subject matter is more than interesting enough by itself with the inclusion of made-up elements.

Its just one of those things I guess. In movies it fine to keeps it as realistic as possible( These are among my favorite movies btw), but for whatever reason it seems necessary to include magic and mythology in games unless it is Age of Empires or Civilization. I guess it comes down to casting the biggest net possible to attract as many people as possible.

I think you got the sword and shield wrong.. they had short swords and rectangular shields..

They did have square shields but also had round sheilds too. You are right about the sword and I have changed in in a revised version of this image which I will be posting later.
Thanks for the comment :)
